John Singleton Clemons (1862-1944)

Senator for Tasmania 1901-1914

John Clemons was born in Launceston, Tasmania and graduated from Oxford University in England. A lawyer, Clemons also had extensive mining interests.

In 1901 Clemons was elected to represent Tasmania in the Senate at the first federal election as a Freetrader and held his seat until 1914. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Customs and Tariff 1904-07, and a minister without portfolio in the Cook ministry 1913-14.

Clemons retired to England and made a few short visits to his homeland.
